Julie Flaspoehler's 85th Birthday:
August 10, 2007
My mother, Julie Flaspoehler,
celebrated her 85th birthday on Friday, August 10, 2007. I was fortunate
enough to
be able to fly home from Dallas to Greenville to take part in the
festivities. Here are my photos from the party and the whirlwind
weekend I spent with mom and the family in Greenville, SC.
We had a lovely party at my sister Barbie's home on Friday night. It
was a typical, small family gathering of 35 assorted brothers and
sisters and cousins, nieces and nephews. And, of course, mom!

Mom is now living in the Bellaire Place assisted living center in
Greenville. On Saturday, at her invitation, I played a short, 30
minute flute recital for the residents, just before lunch. The
program consisted of some Scott Joplin, a bit of Duke Ellington, and
some show tunes. Since there was no opportunity to find an
accompanist and work up a totally live program, I used CD backup for
my performance. My Flute Karaoke program was well received by all
the residents who attended. Afterwards, mom and I shared a nice
lunch in the dining room. I am now working on a program for my
Christmas visit in December.
Other events that weekend included dinner with Cathy and Greg on
Saturday, church on Sunday morning, a lovely dinner party at my
sister Lucy's house and a visit to Greenville's Shakespeare in the
Park at the Reedy River Falls park on Sunday night. The park was beautiful and the
performance of "As You Like It," updated to include CW songs instead
of Elizabethan madrigals, was quite entertaining. You can find out
more about the
Upstate Shakespeare Festival at their website.
On Monday, Mom and I drove up to Asheville, NC, to visit my sister
Judy and to have lunch. I was glad when, at the last minute, my
sisters Mary and Barbie were able to join us for the road trip. The
drive up US 25 through the mountains was beautiful. In Asheville, we had a
nice family visit and a lovely lunch at the
Provence 620
Restaurant, just a short drive from Judy's house. I
can especially recommend the spinakopita on the lunch menu.
Happy Birthday, Nana!
