The 40th Anniversary Reunion of the Graduating Class of 1962
of Greenville High School in Greenville, SC, was held on
August 10, 2002. Scheduled events included a tour of the
school at 11:00 a.m., followed by a sandwich luncheon in the
school cafeteria.
The old school has changed in 40 years, but not
really all that much. Aside from a new and attractive paint job and
some fresh tile on the floors to replace that old red linoleum, the
main change is the addition of the James A. "Slick" Moore
Gymnasium, which thus freed up the gymnasium on the 2nd floor to be
converted into the current library. The science classrooms are now
in the space where the old library used to be. Overall, the
classrooms have not changed that much, and the courtyard, which we
were not allowed to enter in 1962, now includes a picnic area.
Basically, the place seems a lot fresher and brighter than it was in
1962.
I had a great time meeting people and renewing old
friendships. But I did find out at the reunion there were many people I
did not remember, for one very good reason: I never knew them! After
all, there were nearly 500 people in our class, and not all of them were
in the same Home Room! Or even the same English class. I really
appreciate how Harriett Hurt sort of took me under her wing during the
morning session, especially the visit at lunch with Dr. Virginia Uldrick.
She is such a neat person.
From my point of view, the reunion was a great
success, and I am thoroughly glad that I decided to come, and was
able to make the trip from Dallas, TX, where I now live.
