Because
of my brother Rob's recent accident and resulting Traumatic Brain
Injury, and the need to explore both nursing home and treatment/therapy
options, in September, I contacted the Brain Injury Association of Utah.
It was then that I found out about their annual Professional and Family
Conference in Provo on October 10 & 11, 2002. I suggested to Rob's
friend Pamela Hart that she and I attend together, and she agreed.
For me, the conference was a great success. I met lots
of people interested in TBI, from both a professional and personal
level, attended extremely interesting and well presented programs, and
was able to glean a lot of information about treatment and therapy
options for TBI in Utah and Salt Lake City.
Especially inspiring was the Thursday morning keynote
address by Claudia Osborn, D.O. Dr. Osborn is a TBI survivor who has
become a consultant to the medical profession on issues pertaining to
brain injury. 14 years ago, Dr. Osborn was injured in a bike accident
when she was hit by a car. After several years of therapy, Dr. Osborn
has resumed a busy life and become an advocate for persons with TBI. Her
book, Over
My Head, is a inspiring account of her personal experiences with TBI,
a physicians look at brain injury from the inside out.
