 Desirée Mays has delighted and enlightened audiences with her intriguing
talks on opera at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, at leading opera companies
in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Utah, and to Wagner Societies and musical groups
throughout the United States. Her flair for making opera accessible communicates
its timeless relevance to neophytes and aficionados alike.Desirée Mays is the resident lecturer for The Santa Fe Opera, where she has authored the
Opera Unveiled series of books. She has written numerous
articles and program notes on opera, and lectures and hosts tours for
Act 1 Performing Arts
Tours in Europe and America. She has recorded opera preview CDs and
written numerous articles and reviews about opera.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, and trained in London as a ballet dancer, Desirée
Mays has devoted her career in the United States to promoting opera. She is a writer and
reviewer, a speaker and educator, and, above all, a storyteller.
Desirée's opera career has included hosting radio shows, building opera
education programs, reviewing opera, teaching at two Universities, writing, and
providing helpful insights to the thousands who hear her lectures.
Her Opera Unveiled series of books, originally written to describe The Santa Fe Opera's summer seasons, is an indispensable guide,
providing plots, history, anecdotes, and insights into the music, composers, and
operatic characters of five operas.
She holds a Master's degree from the University of Utah in English and
American Literature. Desirée Mays is co-director of Art Forms, Inc., a
non-profit organization whose motto is:
"Art Forms Through Awareness."
