The REFLECTOR is the quarterly newsletter of the Astronomical League. It is mailed to 18,000 members of the Astronomical League, in 240 astronomy clubs, and members-at-large, four times a year, in August, November, February and May. In addition, complementary copies are sent to 300 selected vendors, clubs non-affiliated with the AL, and some other astronomy related institutions. The REFLECTOR budget is $30,000 per year, of which about one-third, or $12,000, is covered by advertising revenue generated by the editor.

The editor is responsible for layout and complete editorial and advertising content of the newsletter, as well as all press and mailing activities. Articles in the REFLECTOR are selected from the contents of astronomy club newsletters furnished to the Editor, and from reports provided by Astronomical League committee members wanting to inform League members of their committee’s activities and services.

When Ed Flaspoehler took over as editor in 1989, the REFLECTOR was an eight-page newsletter printed in black and white. Since May 1994, and after a period of five years growth, the REFLECTOR has been expanded to 24 pages printed in color. There are currently eight color pages and 16 black and white pages per issue. The layout is created using Quark Express 4.0 Desktop Publishing Software, and is provided to the printer on ZIP disk fully formatted and laid out.

In June 1999, the REFLECTOR was awarded an APEX-99 Award for Publication Excellence for a One-Person Produced Newsletter.
