Robert Anthony
Flaspoehler was born in Greenville, SC, on May 6, 1950. He is one of
fourteen brothers and sisters, the fifth child of Edward Paul and Julia
Becker Flaspoehler.
He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and Holy Rosary
Catholic School in Greenville for his elementary education, and is a 1968
graduate of Greenville Senior High School.
After a short tour in the US Marine Corps, he married Yvette
Beaks of Greenville. When their marriage ended, he moved to Salt Lake
City, UT, where he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints. In Utah, he married Carol Chapman, and with her fathered
a beautiful daughter, Brittney Nicole, in 1987. He is now divorced from
Carol, but still lives in Salt Lake City.
Robert Anthony Flaspoehler, suffered
Traumatic Brain Injury as a result of a pedestrian/vehicle accident on
July 22, 2002. He was air lifted from the accident scene to LDS Hospital
in Salt Lake City, where he remained in a coma for several weeks. After
his stay in the hospital for three weeks, he was transferred to Wasatch
Valley Rehabilitation Center in Salt Lake City.
He has now come out of the coma, and
seems to be on a slow but steady improvement. He was placed on a
tracheotomy or breathing tube and feeding tube while he was still in the
hospital. He is now off the trache, but still needs the feeding tube
because he is not yet able to swallow reliably, and is probably not able
to feed himself anyway.
Nevertheless, Rob is fast improving since
coming out of the coma, and is straining the staff resources at Wasatch
Valley Rehab, who are trained to handle geriatric patients, rather than a
very active TBI patient who is improving rapidly. Security is the main
problem, especially since he wants to "go home," which means
walk out into the street, unattended.
In October, 2002, Rob was transferred to the Infinia at Granite Hills rehab facility in Salt Lake
City, which
specializes in TBI patients. It is perhaps not as nice as Wasatch Valley
Rehab, but they do offer the security he needs so he will not walk out of
the building and into the street.
